When creating this piece I was thinking of making a trophy to represent the horse. When I deconstructed the horse and placed it into the microwave my first thought was the soap would melt but instead it became fluffy. So I took the form apart and added cinnamon candies and put it in the microwave again and mixed it around but it wasn't very affective. So i took the candies away and created a form out of it. I added pins into the formation to represent the horse shoe. A few can been seen but most are hidden because they are not something aren't seen on a horse. I wanted to add yellow/black india ink because it would give it some color and also bring some attention to the soap's texture. To add more texture to the piece, I added hot glue to it. Instead of strategically adding it, I wanted the glue do its own thing once it hit the formation. Adding more black on the formation to add drastic contrast on the piece. Lastly I ran it under water and washed my hands with it to get it to the final formation. I added the stand to it which mimics the piece. High contrast and a triangle base so it mimics the shape.
This was harder than I originally thought. Soap carving is not my thing but what I got out of this was patience and looking at the details. Creating something that something out of three materials that describes you. I created a box because my family and I have moved around because of my dad's job. So I used the white foam core to create the box because moving isn't perfect and it is stressful but some how every move that we take seems perfect in the end. The cardboard on the inside of the box is the literal meaning of a box. I used the clear tape because I am sure that I am not done moving and my family isn't either. So the clear tape represents the moves to come. The short story I chose to do was the Lottery Ticket. It was about a middle class couple who had a lottery ticket and while the man was looking at the newspaper he believed that they had won the lottery. They dreamed of things that they could if they had all that money. However, at the end of the short story they discover that they did not win and they felt dirt poor. So I interpreted it by creating a tray out of newspaper, a paper with the headline of the paper as the Unlucky Newspaper. I created the Unlucky Lottery ticket, a cup and a ash try that is stained. The hardest part about this project was creating the cup and the tray. Overall this project was fun because it was different from anything that I done before. The "Shadow Box" was the most challenging for me. In the end I just made a very simple and simplistic scenery. The sculpture is "Human Figure" to demonstrate positive and negative space. This one was my favorite to do, I created an elephant scenery. I cut the top into a leaf pattern so when the light hit it, the piece would become different and more interesting. The "House" was by far the most frustrating one to make because we could not use glue or any adhesive to create it. So when I tried to come up with a house figure, I didn't know what to create. So when playing around with the paper I came up with the weaving idea. Overall, I like how it came out with glue but it was definitely challenging to keep all the paper together. |
